How I Help Camera-Shy Couples Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera
Let’s be honest—most people don’t feel like natural models when a great big camera is pointed at them, and I’d say a good 95% of weddings I photograph feature camera shy couples!

If the thought of being photographed makes you feel a bit awkward or nervous, don’t panic – you’re definitely not alone!
The good news? My job as a wedding photographer isn’t just about capturing beautiful images—it’s about helping you feel comfortable, relaxed, and even (dare I say it?) enjoy the experience!
So, how do I do it? Here’s my approach to making sure you feel like the best version of yourselves in front of the camera.
1. We Keep It Fun and Natural
There’s no stiff posing or forced smiles here. I focus on movement and natural interactions, encouraging you to laugh, chat, and just be yourselves. Whether it’s a silly joke, a little walk together, or just holding hands, I find ways to keep things light and enjoyable.

2. I Give Gentle Guidance (Nothing Too Posey!)
I’ll never leave you standing awkwardly, wondering what to do with your hands! Instead, I will give you some super simple prompts and direction to create natural moments. Think “walk towards me, having a little chat” rather than “tilt your chin exactly 23 degrees.”

3. We Build a Connection Before the Big Day
If I’ve got the enormous pleasure of photographing your wedding day, I’m going to take the time to get to know you beforehand. Whether that’s through a pre-wedding shoot or just a cuppa and a chat, I know for a fact it helps you feel more at ease when the time comes to step in front of the camera.
4. I’m a Big Fan of Distraction Techniques
If you’re overthinking how you look, it’s going to show in the photos. That’s why I’ll get you moving, chatting, or focusing on each other rather than the camera. You’d be amazed how a simple prompt like “whisper something ridiculous in their ear” can bring out the best smiles!

5. You Don’t Have to Be Perfect
The best photos aren’t about perfect poses or airbrushed finishes—they’re about real emotions and genuine moments. If you relax and focus on each other, the magic happens naturally. And if you need a little encouragement, I’m there every step of the way.
6. A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way
If you’re feeling nervous, a bit of planning can help! Wear something you feel good in, give yourselves plenty of time to get ready, and if it helps, bring along a favourite playlist or a little treat (a glass of prosecco, anyone?) to ease those nerves.

7. What You Can Do to Feel Less Awkward
If you’re worried about feeling awkward, there are a few things you can do to help yourself relax:
- Practice in the mirror – It sounds silly, but getting used to your own expressions can help you feel more confident.
- Focus on each other, not the camera – Think of it as a fun moment with your partner rather than a formal photoshoot.
- Take deep breaths – Slowing down your breathing can help ease nervousness and tension.
- Move naturally – Sway, walk, or play with your partner’s hands—movement keeps things looking relaxed and authentic.
- Remind yourself why you’re doing this – It’s about capturing your love, and the way you felt on your wedding day! It’s not about looking perfect!

8. Trust the Process!
Remember, feeling a little camera shy is totally normal, but my job is to help you forget about that and just enjoy the moment. By the time we’re done, you’ll be surprised how easy it all felt!
So if you’re worried about feeling awkward in front of the camera, don’t be. I promise you, with a little guidance, laughter, and a relaxed approach, you’ll come away with beautiful, natural photos that actually feel like you.
