If this is not the first time you’ve seen my work, you’ll know that I’m a big fan of taking amazing confetti shots! And as a seasoned Yorkshire wedding photographer, it’s one of the things I’m asked about most often. So I thought I’d share my top tips with you!
Buy quality confetti
As with anything, you get what you pay for, and if you’re after those amazing confetti photographs for yourself, you need to buy the good stuff! Buy the biodegradable paper confetti, because it floats like a dream. You will need to check with your venue that it’s allowed though, as some only allow the dried flower stuff or petals. I’ll talk about both of those shortly!
More is definitely more when it comes to confetti!
Buy more than you think you need if you want an impactful confetti photo! There really is no such thing as too much confetti. Buy more than you think you need and if you have any leftover get your wedding party involved for a fun group shot.
Organising those amazing confetti shots
Nominate some helpers within your bridal party and ask them to hand out your confetti after the ceremony. Make sure they co-ordinate with your photographer to ensure your guests are aware when and where the confetti shot is happening
Your photographer will usually advise guests on where to stand and tell them to throw the confetti UPWARDS and NOT directly into the faces of the happy couple. (There’s always one or two guests who ignore this! Case in point below!)
Top tips for amazing confetti shots
Walk slowly through it. Keep your heads up, otherwise we’ll just be photographing the tops of your heads!!
Stop and have a smooch half way through. Enjoy the moment!
Hold some in your hands and blow it towards the camera for an alternative confetti shot.
Make them a feature of your couple portraits. Have guests stand off camera and throw the confetti your way!
Another alternative, is that if you’re feeling nervous about your first dance, you could get your wedding party to set off confetti cannons and this will take everyone’s mind off the dancing, including yours!
Flower confetti
If the venue insists it has to be floral, the real petal confetti is the best choice for amazing confetti shots. Though, I understand it can get very expensive!
Which leads us onto dried flower confetti. Just because it isn’t my first choice, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have it! The dried flower stuff is quite small so is harder for the camera to pick up, but it still looks fab and makes for a joyful photograph.
Confetti photos are the best fun, and a great way to get your guests involved in your photos so you do you and enjoy them however you choose to do them!
