If you’re looking to add a touch of drama and magic to your wedding photos, sparklers, fireworks, and smoke bombs are a brilliant way to make your gallery stand out. These colourful extras can bring an epic, joyful vibe to your big day – but they also need a bit of planning and caution to pull off safely and beautifully.
Here’s my no-nonsense guide to getting those stunning shots (without any singed eyebrows!).
Sparkler Wedding Photos
Sparkler photos are a classic – and for good reason. There’s something so magical about those glowing trails of light, especially when it’s dark outside.
Top tips for sparkler success:
- Time it right: You’ll need darkness for the full effect, so plan these for later in the evening.
- Keep it small: You don’t need the whole wedding crowd involved – 10 to 20 guests is perfect.
- Go long: Opt for the long gold sparklers – they burn brighter and last longer.
- Stock up: Get more sparklers and lighters than you think you’ll need – trust me on this one!
- Safety first: Tipsy guests and open flames aren’t the best combo, so have a plan and make sure someone sober is helping coordinate.

Fireworks at Weddings
Thinking of ending the night with a bang? Fireworks make for a romantic and unforgettable photo moment – but they’re definitely one for the professionals.
Things to keep in mind:
- Hire a specialist fireworks company – this isn’t one to DIY!
- Check with your venue – not all allow fireworks, and you’ll need to be mindful of local livestock and neighbours.
- Go big or go home: The more fireworks you have, the more impressive the photos.
- Get cosy: Step away from the crowd, cuddle up, and soak it all in while I snap away from behind.

Colourful Smoke Bomb Wedding Photos
Smoke bombs are such a fun way to add a pop of colour and creativity to your wedding portraits. But remember – these are essentially handheld fireworks, so a little caution goes a long way.
Here’s how to do it right:
- Buy quality: I always recommend Enola Gaye smoke bombs – they’re reliable, vibrant, and less likely to go rogue near your dress!
- Handle with care: Ask a guest to pull the pin, then hold the bomb at arm’s length.
- Get moving: Walk, twirl, kiss – all while colourful smoke swirls around you.
- Timing: They last around 90 seconds – plenty of time for incredible photos.
- Cool them safely: Once used, place them on concrete to cool – never toss them in a bush!
You can even involve your bridal party – just make sure everyone knows the plan ahead of time.
