If you’re wondering whether a winter wedding is actually a good idea, let Rebecca & Stu be your answer.
Because their December wedding at Allerton Castle was the perfect example of why winter weddings can feel incredibly special.

Cosy candlelight. Huge festive atmosphere. Rich colours everywhere. Guests fully leaning into the celebration. And one of the most chaotic, joy-filled ceilidhs I’ve ever photographed.
This wedding felt dramatic, warm, emotional and FUN from start to finish.
And as someone who photographs weddings all year round? I genuinely think winter weddings are massively underrated.
Why Winter Weddings Are Wonderful
There’s something about winter weddings that naturally feels more intimate.
People settle in differently. Guests seem more present somehow. Nobody’s disappearing off into the outside space for hours or worrying about melting makeup in 28-degree heat. Everyone gathers together properly and the whole day often feels closer and cosier as a result.
Rebecca & Stu’s wedding absolutely had that feeling.
The castle was dressed beautifully for Christmas with huge trees, warm lighting, candles everywhere and deep red styling running throughout the day to tie in perfectly with Rebecca’s incredible hair. The whole aesthetic felt rich, moody and festive without becoming overly “Christmas themed”.
And because it gets dark earlier in winter, the atmosphere changes quicker too. Speeches by candlelight? Elite. Dancefloors starting while it still feels like nighttime outside? Also elite.
Winter weddings just naturally lean into atmosphere.

An Alternative Crowd, A Proper Celebration
One of my favourite things about this wedding was how unapologetically them it felt.
Their guests brought so much personality to the day – creative, alternative energy, loads of emotion, loads of laughter and absolutely no pressure for the wedding to fit into a traditional mould.
And in my humble opinion, that’s when weddings are always best.
The grandness of Allerton Castle worked so perfectly alongside that vibe too. Big dramatic interiors paired with relaxed people having the absolute best time creates such a brilliant contrast in photos.
Nothing felt stiff or performative.
Just people fully enjoying themselves in a ridiculously beautiful setting.

The Ceilidh That Descended Into Absolute Chaos
I need to dedicate an entire section to the ceilidh.
Because WOW. If you’ve never considered a ceilidh for your wedding, this is your sign.
Within minutes, people were flying across the dancefloor, shoes were being abandoned in corners, guests were crying laughing and every single photo looked like joyful chaos in the best possible way.
It was one of those evenings where every time I turned around, something hilarious was happening.
And winter weddings really lend themselves to this kind of atmosphere. Once it’s dark outside and everyone’s cosy inside together, the party energy builds SO quickly.
This wasn’t a polite little shuffle around a dancefloor.
This was a full-scale celebration.

The Big Pros of a Winter Wedding
The atmosphere is unmatched
Candles, fairy lights, fireplaces, darker evenings, warm drinks, velvet textures, rich florals… winter weddings naturally feel cinematic without needing loads of extra styling.
Venues often look incredible at Christmas
Lots of venues, especially places like Allerton Castle, are already beautifully decorated for the festive season which means you get loads of atmosphere built in.
They can be more budget-friendly
Winter dates are often cheaper than peak summer Saturdays, especially if you avoid December weekends right before Christmas. Some suppliers and venues also have greater availability.
People are more likely to fully commit
Summer weddings can compete with holidays, festivals and packed social calendars. Winter weddings often become THE event everyone’s excited for.
Cosy really does photograph beautifully
Warm lighting, layered outfits, emotional indoor moments and packed dancefloors all photograph incredibly well.
But… The Cons of a Winter Wedding (Because There Are Some)
I’ll always be honest about this stuff.
You get less daylight
This is the obvious one. In December especially, it gets dark EARLY. Which means timelines matter a bit more if outdoor photos are important to you.
The good news? At venues like Allerton Castle there’s so much beautiful indoor space that this becomes far less of an issue.
The weather is unpredictable
Rain, wind, freezing temperatures… winter definitely keeps us on our toes. You have to embrace the fact that you probably won’t spend hours outside.
Again though, choosing the right venue makes a huge difference.
Travel can occasionally be trickier
Especially if guests are travelling long distances near Christmas or during icy weather periods.
It’s not ideal if you dream of an outdoor wedding
If your absolute priority is outdoor ceremonies, sunshine and golden-hour drinks receptions, winter probably isn’t your season.
But if your priority is atmosphere, emotion, connection and one huge celebration? Winter weddings absolutely shine.
Why Allerton Castle Works So Well in Winter
Some venues are clearly built for summer.
Allerton Castle genuinely works all year round.
The interiors are dramatic enough that you never feel restricted by bad weather and the darker, moodier atmosphere of winter actually suits the venue perfectly. Candlelight bounces beautifully around the rooms, the staircase feels even more cinematic and once the evening starts, the whole place feels magical.
Rebecca & Stu fully embraced all of that.
They didn’t try to force a “summer wedding in winter”.
They leaned into the season, made the day feel completely personal to them and created a wedding that their guests will probably talk about for years.
Which, honestly, is exactly what weddings should be about.
Planning a Winter Wedding?
If you’re planning a winter wedding and want relaxed, candid photography that captures both the atmosphere and the chaos properly, I’d love to hear all about it.
Whether you’re planning a candlelit castle wedding, a cosy countryside celebration or a full-on alternative party with a ceilidh that destroys the dancefloor – I am VERY here for it.
