(Without overthinking it into oblivion)
Choosing your wedding photographer feels huge.
Bigger than flowers.
Bigger than napkins.
Possibly bigger than the cake (controversial).
Because when it’s all over — when the dress is boxed and the confetti’s hoovered out of your hallway — your photos are what’s left.
So if you’re sat there with 37 tabs open, wondering how on earth you’re meant to choose… breathe.
Here’s my honest take on how to choose a wedding photographer — especially if you’re planning a North Yorkshire wedding and the weather could do absolutely anything.

Start With How You Want It to Feel
Not how you want it to look.
That’s the mistake most couples make.
Pinterest will convince you that you need golden-hour perfection and symmetrical flat lays.
But when you’re 60 and looking back, you won’t care if your napkins were hand-torn silk.
You’ll care about:
The way your partner looked at you during the vows.
Your mum squeezing your hand.
Your best friend crying during the speeches.
The chaos of everyone legging it outside when it starts raining sideways.
That’s where style comes in.
Some photographers direct heavily.
Some stage moments.
Some lean more editorial.
Some (hi 👋) document things as they actually unfold.
None of it is wrong. But one of them will feel more like you.

Don’t Just Look at the “Best Of”
Instagram is the highlight reel.
It’s 12 perfect frames from a 10-hour day.
Ask to see a full wedding.
See how they photograph:
Grey skies.
Dark barns.
Wind.
Registry offices.
Drunk uncles.
Because weddings in North Yorkshire are not styled shoots. They’re real. And your photographer needs to be comfortable in that reality.

Ask Questions — But Pay Attention to the Feeling
Yes, ask the practical stuff.
But more importantly… notice how you feel when you talk to them.
Do they make you feel like:
You have to perform?
You need to be more “photogenic”?
You should stand a certain way?
Or do they make you feel relaxed already?
You’re going to spend more time with your photographer than almost any other supplier. If you don’t click, it shows in the photos.
Especially if you’re camera shy. (Which, by the way, is about 90% of my couples.)

You Don’t Need to Be “Good at Photos”
This is important.
You do not need:
To practise poses.
To know your angles.
To lose weight.
To be more confident.
A good wedding photographer adapts to you — not the other way round.
If someone’s work only looks good when couples are super polished and perfectly posed… ask yourself if that’s how you want to spend your day.

Experience Isn’t Just a Number
It’s not about “I’ve shot 300 weddings”.
It’s about:
Staying calm when timelines shift.
Knowing when a speech is about to get emotional.
Fixing your veil without making a fuss.
Working with whatever light the Yorkshire sky throws at us.
You want someone steady. Someone who doesn’t panic when the weather changes or the schedule wobbles.
Because it will wobble. And you want someone who’s going to stay calm for you, and not be worrying about their own personal schedule.

And Then… Trust Your Gut
After all the comparing and spreadsheeting and “but what about…” conversations —
Ask yourselves:
Are we excited at the thought of this person being there on our wedding day?
If the answer is yes, you’ve probably found your person.

Choosing a Wedding Photographer in North Yorkshire
Little regional note for you.
North Yorkshire weddings are unpredictable in the best way.
We get:
Soft moody skies.
Wind that will test your hairstyle.
Golden light for approximately four minutes.
Venues ranging from tiny registry offices to candlelit barns and big country houses.
You want someone who embraces that — not someone waiting for perfect conditions.
Some of my favourite photos have happened in rain. Or under umbrellas. Or in doorways while everyone laughs at the weather.
Perfection is overrated. Real is better.

Final Thought
You’re not hiring someone to create a styled shoot that looks like it should be featured in Vogue.
You’re hiring someone to tell the story of one of the most important days of your life.
Choose someone whose work makes you feel something.
Choose someone who sees the in-between moments.
Choose someone you’d happily have a drink with at the end of the night.
Everything else is detail.
