The morning of your wedding is full of feeling. Excitement, nerves, laughter, happy chaos. People coming and going. Music playing. Someone asking where the prosecco is.
As a documentary wedding photographer in North Yorkshire, bridal prep isn’t about creating a styled photoshoot. It’s about capturing the real moments as they naturally unfold – exactly how it felt to be there.
Here are a few gentle tips to help your wedding morning flow nicely, without overthinking it.

Think about the space and the light
Light matters more than décor every time.
If you’ve got a bright room with a window, that’s perfect. Whether you’re getting ready at home or at your venue, a little space near natural light really helps for relaxed bridal prep photos.
You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect room – just somewhere comfortable where everyone can move around easily. I’ll always work with what you’ve got.

Give yourself more time than you think
Wedding mornings are at their best when they’re un-rushed.
Starting hair, makeup and photography a little earlier creates space for calm, laughter and those lovely in-between moments. The less you’re watching the clock, the more present you’ll feel – and those are always the photos you treasure most.

Have your details together (no styling required)
If you’d like your details photographed, just pop them somewhere easy to grab. No need to arrange them beautifully – that’s my job.
You might include:
- Dress
- Shoes
- Jewellery
- Veil or hair accessory
- Perfume
- Flowers
- Invitation or order of service
Top tip: if possible, swap the plastic hanger for a wooden or fabric one for your dress.

What to wear while getting ready
Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable.
Matching pyjamas? Lovely if you want them.
Leggings and an old t-shirt? Also perfect.
Documentary bridal prep photography is about connection, emotion and movement – not coordinated outfits. Comfort always wins. (But look the matching stuff is also fine if you want them, do it!)

Don’t worry too much about mess
Wedding mornings are busy and a bit chaotic – that’s normal.
If there’s time to keep one area relatively clear, great. If not, don’t stress. I’ll focus on moments, not mess.

Include the people who matter to you
Your wedding morning might include parents, grandparents, siblings, friends or chosen family. Whoever is there with you is important.
Taking a moment with them – a hug, a chat, a quiet pause – often leads to some of the most emotional photos of the entire day.
First looks don’t have to be traditional either. Reveals with family members or friends can be just as powerful.

Relax and let the morning happen
This is your wedding day.
Everyone in the room loves you and is there to support you.
Put some music on. Have a drink if you fancy it. Let people help you into your dress. I’ll quietly document it all as it unfolds – the nerves, the laughter, the happy chaos and the calm.

Please eat something
I know I sound like a mum. That’s because I am one.
Even a small breakfast or a few bites will help carry you through the day. Weddings are emotional and long – fuelling yourself really matters.

Natural bridal portraits
If timings allow, we’ll usually take a few relaxed bridal portraits once you’re ready. Nothing stiff or awkward – just natural, unposed moments before the day fully begins.ts
