Weddings at Tithe Barn, Bolton Abbey
Relaxed, atmospheric wedding photography in one of Yorkshire’s most iconic barns
Why I love Tithe Barn Weddings
The Tithe Barn at Bolton Abbey is one of those venues that just quietly blows people away.
It’s big, properly big, but it never feels overwhelming. The scale gives you that instant wow-factor without needing loads of styling or faff. The exposed stone walls and huge timber beams do all the heavy lifting, creating depth, texture and atmosphere in a way that photographs beautifully from the moment you walk in.
And then as the day moves on? It just gets better.
Once the candles are lit and the light starts to drop, the whole space softens. It goes from impressive to properly romantic, warm, glowy, and full of atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where speeches feel emotional, the energy builds naturally, and the evening party feels like a proper shift in vibe rather than a forced “right, now we dance”.
One of the biggest advantages of Tithe Barn is where it sits. You’re right on the edge of Bolton Abbey, which means you’ve got some of the best portrait locations in Yorkshire within minutes. Riverside walks, historic stone architecture and open countryside, giving you loads of variety without dragging you away from your guests for ages.
From a photography point of view, that’s gold. We can nip out for a short while, get something completely different, and you’re straight back into the day.
It’s especially perfect for larger weddings. There’s space for everyone to breathe, move and mingle. When it’s full, the atmosphere is incredible. Add in that Yorkshire countryside setting and you’ve got a venue that feels both grand and grounded at the same time.
If you’re after something romantic, atmospheric, and a little bit epic without trying too hard, this is it.
This styled shoot was all about showing what a relaxed, joy-filled wedding at Sedgewell Barn could look like using the courtyard, the surrounding countryside, and all that gorgeous natural light the venue gives you.
If you love this kind of barn wedding with loads of atmosphere and energy, you’ll also love this:
A different Cripps & Co venue, same big energy, packed dancefloor, and a proper celebration from start to finish.
“Hannah, in short, turned up and saved the day! Our original photographer called us the evening before our wedding and told us she had pulled her back and could barely move but would find a replacement.
Hannah showed up promptly and instantly put me at ease. She was so lovely, confident and professional, it was almost like we’d picked her from the start. She knew the venue well and her style was so unobtrusive. It was a joy to have her capture our wedding and she did a wonderful job. “

The getting-ready bits
Wedding mornings at Tithe Barn are always a bit special. There is no accommodation onsite so you’ll likely be in nearby accommodation or at home if you’re local. Either way, I’ll capture everything as it unfolds – calm, excited and slightly chaotic in the best possible way.
Making the most of Bolton Abbey
This is where this venue really shines. If you choose to, we can step away from the action and go to the Abbey to get riverside shots, historic architecture, or soft countryside backdrops, without disappearing for ages. Or if you prefer to keep it low key, we can make use of the Tithe Barn’s garden and surroundings.
That candlelit atmosphere
Once the lights drop and the candles are lit, the barn comes alive. I’ll lean into that, capturing the mood, the movement, and all the energy as the evening builds.
Is Tithe Barn at Bolton Abbey good for wedding photography?
Yes, it’s seriously incredible. The scale, textures and candlelight create a really atmospheric space, and the surrounding area gives loads of variety for portraits.
Do we need to travel for couple photos?
No, everything is right there. There are spaces inside and out of the Barn. However, if you feel like making a trip down to it, Bolton Abbey offers riverside, countryside and historic backdrops and we can get there within minutes.
Is it suitable for large weddings?
Definitely. The barn is perfect for bigger guest numbers up to 200 for the feast, and feels amazing when it’s full.
What’s the evening like at Tithe Barn?
Warm, atmospheric and full of energy. Once the candles are lit and the music starts, it turns into a proper celebration space.
Do we need lots of styling here?
Not at all. The barn has so much character already that you can keep things simple and it’ll still look incredible.
